A common problem for researchers and RDM staff is keeping track of the large market for ELN software (electronic lab notebooks) in order to select suitable ELN software or services for their own laboratory or institution. The web service ‘ELN Finder’ (https://eln-finder.ulb.tu-darmstadt.de) can help with this. This online tool contains detailed information on individual ELN products, and filter criteria can be used to generate a list of suitable ELNs. The tool is available in English.

The web portal was officially launched in 2023, after which the focus was on expanding the database and maintaining it on an ongoing basis. In 2024/25, the ELN Finder was further expanded: with the release of the second version of the metadata schema, 45 filter criteria are now available, which are in turn divided into clear categories. In addition, a number of new contributors were recruited who added their tools to the database. Best practice examples were implemented in collaboration with external partners.

The ELN Finder is organised by ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences, and its editorial team consists of numerous experts and users of ELN tools from all over Germany. The technical implementation as a web service is carried out by the University and State Library (ULB) Darmstadt, based on the open source software DSpace.
