Data Quality Made Visible: Pubservatory Highlights PubMed Updates

ZB MED has launched Pubservatory, a new tool that makes the continuous curation of the PubMed database visible. Pubservatory, currently in beta, tracks how many and which records have been added or removed within a given timeframe.

Maintaining high-quality literature databases requires constant curation — correcting errors, removing duplicates, and adding new publications. The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) has ensured this for over 150 years with PubMed. Pubservatory makes these ongoing updates transparent. The tool provides interactive visualizations that highlight weekly updates and deletions in PubMed, offering researchers, librarians, and information specialists a clear view of the database’s evolution. Deleted records usually represent duplicates, ensuring data integrity while keeping the collection clean and reliable.

A new version, planned for spring 2026, will provide even more detailed insights by distinguishing between types of changes such as duplicate removals.

Key Features

  • Weekly tracking of additions and deletions
  • Interactive time-based visualizations
  • Direct links to individual publications
  • Combined or separate display of updates and deletions
  • Comprehensive documentation of all modifications

Pubservatory strengthens transparency in scientific information systems and supports researchers in maintaining trust in the reliability of bibliographic data.
