Health Study Hub and Datennexus win Post-COVID Challenge for secure and responsible use of health data

The Post-COVID Challenge, initiated by the German Federal Ministries for Economic Affairs and the Interior, has awarded first place to the Datennexus – a joint project led by the European consulting firm d-fine. The winning solution enables secure, privacy-compliant linking of patient-level data across sources within a decentralized data ecosystem. A key component of the project is the Health Study Hub, developed by NFDI4Health, which contributes a comprehensive metadata catalogue to support effective data discovery.

The jury praised the project’s technical excellence, practical applicability, and potential for broader impact in health research. With the use of a transaction-based data trustee (EuroDaT), the solution ensures data protection while enabling meaningful research. NFDI4Health’s metadata schema plays a central role in structuring and standardizing health data, making it findable and reusable across disciplines.

The Post-COVID Challenge highlights how innovative, scalable solutions can pave the way toward a sustainable and secure health data space in Germany—potentially serving as a model for other areas of medical research.
