GMS presents Best Paper Award 2013

On 10 December 2014 Prof. Dr. med. Hans Reinauer presented the 'Best Paper Award 2013' to Prof. Dr. med. Christian Thielscher, Dr. med. Stefan Thielscher and Prof. Dr. Karel Kostev at a ceremony in Düsseldorf organised by German Medical Science (GMS).

The scientists received the award – which comes with a prize of 500 euros – for their paper on "The risk of developing depression when suffering from neurological diseases". A clear majority of the GMS Scientific Committee members put forward this paper for the 'Best Paper Award 2013' from "GMS German Medical Science - an interdisciplinary journal" – and their choice was backed by the chair of the German Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).

Prof. Reinauer, Editor-in-chief of GMS German Medical Science, highlighted the relevance of the study, which drew on an exceptionally large quantity of data from day-to-day clinical practice, and congratulated the prize-winners on their achievement.

In accepting the award, the authors of the paper explained that the aim of the study had been to determine how frequently people suffering from neurological diseases (Alzheimer's, dementia, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease) develop depression.
The original paper is freely available online in the open access journal "GMS German Medical Science - an interdisciplinary journal" at:

Created in collaboration with the German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) and ZB MED – Leibniz Information Centre for Life Sciences, it provides free and open access to high-ranking and quality-reviewed specialist medical texts and conference reports. The German Medical Science portal enables researchers and scientists working in the field of medicine to publish their research findings online under the open access model. A total of 15 academic journals are currently published through GMS.
