Invitation: Colloquium on the quality assessment of doctoral theses prepared.

New offer for publication advice and the publishing of medical doctoral theses with the University of Cologne.

Many PhD students ask themselves: Is my thesis good enough to be submitted? ZB MED - Information Centre for Life Sciences is therefore offering a colloquium on the quality assessment of doctoral theses in cooperation with the University of Cologne under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dietrich Rebholz-Schuhmann. The aim of the colloquium is to examine theses that are about to be submitted in exchange with other doctoral students and to give advice on final improvements. The advice comes from the other participants as well as from ZB MED staff. Suggestions for improvement are developed in the exchange. The colloquium expands ZB MED's offer to publish medical doctoral theses with the University of Cologne.

Target group:

Doctoral students in human medicine at the University of Cologne who are in the final phase of writing their thesis, i.e. up to six months before submission.

Contents:

It is clarified whether the thesis still has weaknesses in terms of:

  • Formulation of objectives,
  • structure,
  • Selection of content,
  • method,
  • data selection,
  • data analysis,
  • data preparation,
  • language,
  • Literature selection,
  • Copyright aspects (e.g. correct citation).
  • Subsequently, it is discussed how the weaknesses can be remedied or reduced.

Schedule:

  • Interested parties submit their work by e-mail and receive feedback within a maximum of two weeks as to whether they can participate and when the meeting will take place.
  • Four doctoral candidates take part in the two-hour colloquium.
  • Each participant receives the papers of his/her own group, including the evaluation scheme, in advance and prepares one evaluation per paper. All materials are to be handled confidentially.
  • During the meeting, participants will receive feedback from the group of attendees as well as from Prof. Dr. Rebholz-Schuhmann and selected ZB MED staff.
