How does supraregional access work?

You can search for e-books in our subject areas by visiting our search portal LIVIVO. E-books are identifiable by the media type icon “online” (globe icon) and the tab “full text online”. Each licensed online title links directly to the full text. By clicking the link you are forwarded at first to an info page for access rights and secondly to the publisher’s server. The links will work, if you have previously installed ZB MED’s proxy server. It is mandatory to identify yourself as a ZB MED-user with your login details. You were issued your login details with your ZB MED-library card.

To simplify the usage, you may also install the free-of-charge Firefox and Google-Chrome add-on FoxyProxy.

Check that your Internet connection is working.

Step 2: Check your browser settings:

Make sure, you have installed ZB MED-proxy server. Information on how to install ZB MED-proxy server can be found on LIVIVO.

Introduction on how to install the proxy server (PDF)

You can test the installation of the ZB MEDproxy server on the website www.wieistmeineip.de The test was successful if the resulting IP is 134.95.56.240.

You can only test your IP on above mentioned website because only this website is routed through the ZB MEDproxy server. Any other testing website will display an IP your internet provider uses.

Step 3: Try accessing other items:

  • Verify that you are also unable to access other items. As a precaution, experiment with different publishers.
  • Sometimes the number of simultaneous access is limited by the publisher. You may access the e-book or e-journal, as soon as another user has logged off.
  • Try again later. Occasionally one publisher's server may be overloaded or offline for maintenance work.

Step 4: Is Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer?

To browse and print PDF files, you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Alternatively you can try opening the items as HTML files. The latest version of Acrobat Reader is available from Adobe's websit

Step 5: Do you have cookies activated in your browser?

Most publishers' websites require you to accept cookies. Check that you have cookies activated in your browser as follows:

  • Firefox: Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Set the “Firefox will” option to “Use custom settings for history” -> Tick the box "Accept cookies from sites"
  • MS Internet Explorer: Tools -> Internet options -> Privacy -> Adjust your setting for the Internet zone or click Advanced for further options

Step 6: Do you have JavaScript activated in your browser?

Some publishers require JavaScript to be activated before you can use their website.

  • Firefox: Tools -> Options -> Content -> tick the box next to “Enable JavaScript"
  • MS Internet Explorer: Tools -> Internet options -> Security -> Custom level -> enable "Active Scripting"

Step 7: Contact us for help!

To help us try to solve the problem you will need to supply us with the following information:

  • What are the details of the e-book or e-journal you are trying to access (title, year, issue, article)?
  • Are you only having problems accessing this particular item or is it a wider problem?

Occasionally publishers might block access to their data for short periods without our knowledge. We are always grateful to have this brought to our attention. We will do our best to reply to your e-mail as soon as possible.
