Where can I find...in Cologne?

Important: As a general rule, the digitisation of library holdings using scanners or digital cameras is prohibited for copyright reasons. Please consult library management for more information. Desktop computers (not including office applications) and Wi-Fi are available in the reading rooms. You are welcome to bring your own laptop.

Open shelving

  • A selection of key manuals, compendiums and textbooks (ground floor reading room)
  • Dictionaries and encyclopaedias (ground floor reading room)
  • Books acquired by the library since 2010 (ground floor reading room)
  • Patient reference materials (ground floor reading room)

Books acquired up to 2009, bibliographies, theses and postdoctoral ("Habilitation") theses are not available in open shelving but can be ordered through LIVIVO.

Reference stacks

The reference stacks include handbooks, manuals and journals. These items can only be used in the reading room. Please return them to the correct shelves after use. These items are always available because they cannot be taken out on loan.

Journals

Journals cannot be taken out on loan. The majority of our journals are available on open shelving.

You can access the LFI Building via the bridge on the second floor. (“LFI” is the German abbreviation for "Lehre, Forschung, Information", i.e. "Teaching, research, information")  Please note that this part of the library premises closes 30 minutes earlier!

How to order printed journal volumes and bibliographies

Journal volumes can only be browsed in the library's reading rooms.

Older, pre-1985 volumes with the shelf marks Ua ... - Uo ..., Se ... and Zs.B ... and large-format journals (indicated by an "X" in the shelf mark) – as well as shelf marks Zs.A up to 1994 – must be requested from the closed stack by submitting an order slip.

Important: If you require access to pre-1985 journal volumes (or pre-1995 in the case of Zs.A), please place your order using the online order form for printed journal volumes and bibliographies.

The item(s) you ordered will be kept available for collection from the LFI building shelves for a maximum of 10 working days.

Time required to fill orders

  • Orders placed before 12 midday on weekdays (not including Saturday):
    Available for collection from 2 p.m. on the same day
  • Orders placed after 12 midday on a Friday or on the day before a bank holiday:
    Available for collection from 2 p.m. on the following weekday (not including Saturdays)

If you are travelling to the library from outside the city and will only be spending one day in Cologne and/or if you need more than 10 volumes, please contact the journal stack staff by e-mail to discuss your requirements at least two days before placing an order for the volumes.

Ordering journal volumes on CD/DVD

If you wish to order journals on CD or DVD – which cannot be ordered through LIVIVO – please use the online order form for journal issues on CD/DVD.

  • Orders placed before 12 midday on weekdays (not including Saturday):
    Available for collection from 2 p.m. on the same day
  • Orders placed after 12 midday on a Friday or on the day before a bank holiday:
    Available for collection from 2 p.m. on the following weekday (not including Saturdays)

The item(s) you ordered will be available for collection from the lending desk for a period of 10 days after you submit your order.
