Digital preservation

The key responsibilities of a library include collecting, preparing and storing documents and information sources for science and research and making them accessible.

Increasing quantities of information are no longer being printed, but are only being made available in digital form. This shift to digital media has created new responsibilities for heritage institutions entrusted with storage and preservation tasks. They are now responsible for preserving digital material for the long term and making it accessible.

ZB MED's holdings include numerous electronic media such as dissertations, electronic journals, national licenses, retrodigitised content and other items. ZB MED meets the challenges of digital preservation by working closely with its two Goportis partners, the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) and the National Library of Economics – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics (ZBW).

We have been running a collaborative digital preservation and long-term archiving system since April 2010 and are continuously developing new strategies and workflows to add digital holdings to our archive. What started out as a project has now been integrated in the library environment as an ongoing task.

The key to performing this task successfully lies in international cooperation and collaboration among multiple institutions. As part of its Goportis activities, ZB MED is therefore actively involved in networks of excellence on a national level (nestor) and on an international level (Open Preservation Foundation).
