Collection policy of the ZB MED

The library's collection policy is based on guidelines issued by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2010. These guidelines are aimed at facilitating the provision of literature and digital sources of information throughout Germany in the form of special subject collections and virtual libraries. They are currently only available in German: "Richtlinien zur überregionalen Literaturversorgung der Sondersammelgebiete und Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken".

Information about the medical disciplines on which our collection policy is based

This list provides a ‘pragmatic’ overview of the range of subjects that the German National Library of Medicine collects and makes no claim to follow a rigorous scientific system. It is pragmatic in the sense that the terms selected from among the multitude of possibilities represent those terms that are scientifically accepted in research literature and/or widely used in medical practice.

The list was compiled on the basis of official publications such as:

For disciplines which include more than just medical aspects, the German National Library of Medicine limits itself to the acquisition of publications relevant to medicine.  These subject areas are indicated in the list above by the phrase "medical aspects" (for example, "Informatics (medical aspects)" rather than "Medical Informatics", and "Physics (medical aspects)" rather than "Medical Physics").

ZB MED Nutrition. Environment. Agriculture.

In line with its collection policy for print publications, electronic documents and bibliographical references, the ZB MED primarily focuses on the science-related content of nutritional, environmental and agricultural science to the extent that this is related to the food and value chain. Our collection policy does not include general aspects from the fields of technology, business/economics, law, politics, or sociology. Equally, our collection does not cover the history of the subject areas of nutrition, agriculture and the environment. Occasionally, standard reference works may be acquired in these areas, though this is not our general policy.

The library's stock development policy is systematically based on the themes of the "Environment – People – Nutrition – Health" value cycle. It covers the full spectrum from environmental conditions, animal breeding, plant cultivation and agricultural production (food/renewable resources/sources of energy) right the way through to human beings as consumers.

In light of the world's growing population, one of the most important current global objectives is to provide people with the nutrition they need to stay fit and healthy while simultaneously conserving and protecting natural resources. Our multi-discipline collection policy also focuses on efforts to ensure food safety and traceability as part of consumer protection.

Our collections are rounded off with the acquisition of specialist literature on the effects of land use and of further anthropogenic influences on the climate and on the natural and built-up environment.

Is there something you feel we should add to our stock?

Please feel free to contact us by e-Mail or phone. We are always happy to receive suggestions for new acquisitions.
