eyeMoviePedia is a portal that allows eye surgeons to publish videos of surgical procedures in the field of ophthalmology and present them to a wider audience for discussion. The videos are edited and peer-reviewed by professionals in the subspecialities of ophthalmology who add their own expert commentary to the films. The portal gives viewers the opportunity to add their own comments to the video clips. These comments are then also subject to peer review. This opens up a process of communication within the scientific community. Conceived as a pilot project, it is hoped that eyeMoviePedia will reveal the extent to which multimedia portals of this type can be implemented with the cooperation of specialists from the respective field. The next stage of the project will be to transfer these findings to other disciplines that fall within ZB MED’s areas of specialization. The project was initiated by Professor Kirchhof from the Centre of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Cologne in collaboration with ZB MED.
