The reading room is available for use during the library's opening hours. The following resources are spread over the reading room’s various floors: 

• General information and reference desk
• Reading places, study booths and group work rooms
• Catalogues of our holdings
• Microfilm/microfiche readers
• Photocopiers

• Books acquired by the library since 2006
• Journals and serial publications from 1985 onwards
• The textbook collection

You can browse as many of the library's holdings as you like in the reading room. If you wish to take items out on loan you will need a library card.  

Bags, rucksacks and laptop cases are not permitted in the reading room. A cloakroom and lockers are available on the ground floor. Please bring your own padlock.

Silence must be observed in the reading room. It is prohibited to make telephone calls, smoke, eat, or drink in the reading room (though water bottles are permitted).

Reference stacks

The reference stacks include bibliographies, handbooks and journals. These materials can only be used in the reading room. Please return them to the correct shelves after use. These items are always available because they cannot be taken out on loan.
Special reference works which are kept at the lending desk for security reasons require you to leave some form of identification if you wish to browse them.

Computers and electronic resources

Computers with Internet access are provided for research purposes in the library's reading rooms. You will need a library card to use these Internet access points.

Within the network of the University of Cologne, you can access a wide range of  databases and e-journals.

Once you have found the results you need, you can choose to either print them (you will need a copy card to do this), send them by e-mail, or save them to a USB stick. No word processing software is installed on the computers.

• General and specialist reference works
• Basic introductions on the subjects of nutrition, the environment and agriculture.
• Journal issues from the year 2000 onwards 

These holdings are reference stacks, i.e. they are available for browsing and copying on site but cannot be taken out on loan.
