Open stacks

All our journals from 1985 onwards are available from open access shelving in the reading room.

You can access the LFI Building via the bridge on the second floor. (“LFI” is the German abbreviation for "Lehre, Forschung, Information", i.e. "Teaching, research, information")

How to order journal volumes

Journal volumes can only be used in the reading room of the ZB MED Medicine. Health.

Older, pre-1985 volumes or large-format journals (indicated by an "X" in the shelf mark) must be requested from the closed stack by submitting an order slip. 

Important: If you require access to pre-1985 journal volumes, please place your order two days in advance:

Online order form for journal volumes

The items will typically be kept available on the shelves in the LFI building for a period of 10 days after you submit your order.

Time required to fill orders

• Order before 12 midday on weekdays (not including Saturday) and you can collect your items from 2 p.m. on the same day

• Order after 12 midday on a Friday or on the day before a bank holiday and you can collect your items from 2 p.m. on the following weekday (not including Saturdays)

If you are travelling to the library from outside the city and will only be spending one day in Cologne and/or if you need more than 10 volumes, please contact journal stack staff (e-mail: zeitschriftenmagazin@zbmed.de) to discuss your requirements at least two days before placing an order for the volumes.

Please use our catalogue to find information on journal titles and their locations (shelf marks). Journal issues from 1980 onwards are freely accessible during the library's normal opening hours.

Locations

1^st floor Journal Reading Room (German abbreviation: LSZ)

• The reading room provides open access to journal issues from 2000 onwards, arranged by shelf mark. These items may also be photocopied.

1^st basement level stack

• Contains all journals from 1980 to 1999. You can browse and photocopy the holdings on this level during opening hours.

2^nd basement level, closed stack

• Contains all journal issues up to 1979. To browse these stacks, you will need to apply and register in advance.

Before you visit: our recommendation

We recommend that you search for the journals you need in the journal database ZDB before coming to the library in order to ensure that the required journal title and issue is available in our stacks. Please look for the library codes 98 and 5N within the state of North Rhine-Westphalia to confirm that the items are among our holdings.
