Project description
The explosion in the quantity of medical information available to doctors, patients and decision-makers in the healthcare sector makes it tremendously difficult for them to maintain a clear overview. What is required is the establishment of up-to-date treatment standards based on evidence-based knowledge.
The aim of the project was to provide free access to a regularly updated system that allows users to search for clinical studies in the field of haemato-oncology selected according to evidence-based medicine criteria. The system is aimed at doctors and other specialists interested in the field of haemato-oncology. The database features randomised controlled studies and clinical controlled studies from 1958 onwards.
There are two key things that make the TIHO database so useful:
- It does not include any reviews, meta-analyses, protocols, prognostic studies, diagnostic studies, or animal experimental studies. That makes it an excellent search tool for focusing purely on finding clinically relevant studies.
- It provides access to abstracts from congresses relevant to the field of haemato-oncology.
This joint project was carried out between October 2003 and the end of 2006 by the Cochrane Haematological Malignancies Group (http://chmg.de) and the German National Library of Medicine (ZB MED).
The Cochrane Collaboration is an international association of doctors, health researchers and patients' groups that produces the well-known Cochrane Reviews. These rigorously reviewed publications bring together all the clinical studies on a specific topic, review them on the basis of defined criteria and interpret and assess their findings.
The Cochrane Haematological Malignancies Group (CHMG) was founded in 2000 to conduct work in the field of haematological diseases. It is an international review group, whose project management team is based at the University Hospital of Cologne. In line with the guidelines of The Cochrane Collaboration, the review group meets its objectives by establishing and maintaining a Specialised Trials Register – a database in which studies in the haemato-oncology review group's sphere of responsibility are identified, logged and regularly updated.
The data from the CHMG register forms the basis for the development of the "Database of clinical trials in haematological malignancies" (TIHO) at the ZB MED.
The TIHO data is incorporated in the search index of the MEDPILOT portal.
