National licensing

Since 2004, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has been funding the acquisition of national licences with the aim of sustainably improving access to electronic sources of specialized information for German universities, research institutions and science libraries. The national licences scheme aims to incorporate digital media into national supplies of literature as part of the German Research Foundation's special subject collection plan (Sondersammelgebietsplan).

The goal is to facilitate free access to databases, collections of digital texts and electronic journals for scientists, students and individuals interested in science.

To date, eight institutions across Germany have signed the required licensing agreements with professional associations, publishers and other information providers – and ZB MED is one of them. The ZB MED is also one of the central points of contact that helps make the data available.

The ZB MED has acquired the following DFG national licences:

• Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins: 226 journals
• Thieme: 43 journals
• Mary Ann Liebert: 60 journals
• American Physiological Society: 13 journals
• American Society for Clinical Oncology: 1 journal
• Informa Healthcare: 153 journals
• Springer ebooks Medicine: 1,250 e-books
• Endocrine Legacy: 4 journals
• Psychiatry Legacy Collection: 6 journals

Knowledge Exchange

The international Knowledge Exchange network (DEFF, DFG, JISC, SURF; http://www.knowledge-exchange.info/) has successfully opened up access to a series of new products in Germany. On the basis of the framework agreement signed with Knowledge Exchange, the publishers have granted special conditions for six products for the licensing period 2009 - 2011.
 
The ZB MED has succeeded in negotiating a DFG national licence for TheScientificWorldJOURNAL / TheScientificWorld (http://www.thescientificworld.com): The aim is to provide access to the contents of this scientific and medical publication platform which includes both fee-based and open access publications.
